First off, a few rants. One, there's no American spies in Africa. There's no need for them as most African countries work together with Europe and the US.
There's local crime- and warlords that need to be kept in check, but local governments (with again help from Europe and the US) use infiltrators. The worst kind are white and female. It's Central Africa we're talking about, right?
Second, there used to be a Patrice Lumumba in the Kasai Province of the Belgian Congo. He was the founder of the Liberation Movement that led to the Independence of Belgian Congo. Lumumba was destined to become prime minister under president Joseph Kasavubu, but he was murdered, with the help of the CIA.
Since then, no African walks around with the name Lumumba on his or her ID card or passport.
The story itself, however well written, seem to display an eagerness to come across as an erotic tale, jumping right into the thick of the action as of paragraph 4.
I would have liked a more clinical approach, closer to reality, instead of being confronted with a tale that exhumes too much wishful thinking and too little realism.
On the other hand, it could be that Cortez knows of what happened in the Belgian Congo and that he wanted Lumumba to have a posthumous chance to get back at the CIA, but I very much doubt that, since it's Mutabe that takes the lion's share of the action.
Nevertheless, I moderately enjoyed the read.
