Freddie Clegg has knowledge. Knowledge about the importance of that very first sentence; the opener of a story.
I can't recall any of the Clegg stories I've read so far, not having a great opening line. Like I said: knowledge.
Of course, it could be that Freddie doesn't give a shit and that he simply opens with the first line that springs to mind. Which would still mean he has The Knowledge, but unbeknownst. Makes sense, doesn't it.
I'm also one to rate a story for the writing, not so much for the content.
If someone were to upload a romanticized version of his Black & Decker power drill manual, hey, I'll rate it accordingly...
Freddie Clegg --and I'm repeating myself here-- is one of those few who truly are writers, with or without co-authorship.
As a consequence, I can't do else but hand out --mostly-- tenners to Freddie.
Because, what are the basics of a Freddie Clegg story?
First of all, good, solid writing. Secondly, a well thought-out plot. Thirdly, some great conversations which are enjoyable both for their content as for the way Freddie uses those conversations to draw the different characters.
And then there's of course the humor. Not that Freddie writes slapstick, but he's got the knack of adding these little twists in his sentences, you know, like little afterthoughts we all have. Well, most of us do.
It speaks of intelligence. Of an analitic mind. Of observations. Of knowledge, again.
"Education, Education, Education" is a treat once more, because of the ingredients I mentioned earlier. They're all there.
The introductions to the different characters are full of wit, marinated in an overall tone of wonderment as to why some of those individuals act the way they do. The world upside down, as is often the case with nutty professors doing research.
Okay, so the sex is rather absent in this tale. But so is God from our world. Still, people believe.
I believe too. In Freddie Clegg. I just don't pray to the man. Not yet, at least...

Well, thanks again Jimmy. This was the first ever story I published, so I guess it's good to know it set some sort of standard! (10/10)

Interesting! This story left me with a dilemma in regards to rating. The writing is highly competent and stylish, with some delicious details, but I thought the first person narration is too distant and cool. Too clever by half.
The story also seems to be a highly condensed long story rather than a short story proper. It also lacked very much eroticism - a real problem if you are looking for high ratings here. (8/10)

Sorry but I was looking for some sex thrown in somewhere in the story. I wasn't looking for an academic treatment of the slaver trade. (5/10)
