Chapter 21
It was now our junior year in high school and Mary and I got
our driver's licenses. My Dad would now let me drive his car or
pickup. Mary really got lucky. Her Dad bought her an old
Volkswagen Beetle which he overhauled so it ran great. The car
gave us a lot more freedom and a chance to meet some boys other
than the ones provided at the school dances by the boy's Catholic
school. We found to our dismay that even the boy's from public
schools were nearly as naive as the ones we had met at the
dances. Even worse, to Mary's chagrin, they had big mouths. Mary
had gone out with a boy she thought was cute. She told me that
she was so horny she had been willing to let him do anything he
wanted. The ninny was satisfied just by feeling her breasts and
then according to Mary's friends, could not wait to tell everyone
what he had done and how easy she was. This soured us completely
on the local boys and really made us miss Paul. Finally Mary got
the brilliant idea of going to Spokane ostensibly to get
brochures from and to inspect the college located there. In fact,
of course, we simply wanted to see Paul again. My Dad was not
impressed with the idea since he assumed I would go to the
teachers college in Ellensburg to follow in my Mother's
footsteps. He also argued that it would be so much cheaper at
Ellensburg as I could live at home. He relented when I told him I
would only go to college in Spokane in the event I got a
scholarship. He knew my grades weren't good enough nor was I a
great athlete. He insisted we stay over-night as it was a four
hour drive one-way and he did not want us to drive back at night
tired out. He gave us money for a motel and meals. This really
helped Mary as she was having trouble with her folks justifying
an over-night trip. When they heard what my Dad said they agreed
to have us stay over. They were having some sort of argument with
Paul's parents so fortunately did not suggest we stay with them.
We drove to Spokane early Saturday morning as fast as the
little bug would go. We went to the college first to grab some
brochures and take a quick look around to show our folks when we
got home.
We then went directly to Paul's house to let him know we
would be at a motel so he could meet us there. We were both
really excited by the time we got to his house and was devastated
to hear from his Mother that he was not at home. He had gone
fishing somewhere and had not told her where he had gone. We
started back to the car very dejected when Paul's little brother
Jack, came over to say that Paul was at a fishing cabin up in the
hills. Jack said confidentially that Paul had not told their Mom
where he was going as he had some beer with him. Jack gave us
detailed directions to the cabin and we set off to find him.
