- If anything comes to life from the pages of these stories, that is an illusion created in words, and existing only in the mind, and that is where it should remain.
I started writing long before I discovered Dolcett's art, and Morgan Drake's 'Flowers of Hell' was published by Ophelia Press years before Dolcett's extraordinary works, such as the illustrated story 'Meredith's Last Interview'. The appearance of Dolcett's art on the internet had unexpected consequences. Women admitted having similar fantasies to men, often of the kind depicted by Dolcett in his art. Men realised that it was pretty normal for both sexes to enjoy fantasies like this. It didn't have to relate at all to misogyny, or their behaviour towards women in the real everyday world in which, unfortunately, some are equally abusive in their behaviour and their words. Just as fragments of familiar personalities, experiences and situations occur in our dreams, they also occur in our fantasies. Dolcett's characters cheerfully accept the most outrageous situations as normal in his fantasy world, and so do I. Dolcett's art uses recognisable fragments to create an illusion of normality, and I have tried to do the same. That does not mean that I personally believe that any of it is, or could be real, or that anything in these stories reflects my own feelings towards women. I have been privileged to venture into the minds of many women who were eager to tell me about their own erotic fantasies, often begging me to write the kind of thing their own minds dwell upon. Oedipus does not figure in my own private fantasies, but exists, to a degree, in many women's minds. Primeval associations between the image of the human body and penetration or nurture are common elements, as is the destruction of what is most prized. Taboos are the antithesis of fantasy. Technology can also be deceptive. I hope my ideas are credible enough that the story works, but do not expect them to really work. Do not attempt to replicate anything mentioned in this story, or use anything similar to cause either pleasure or pain, or any harm whatsoever, to a real person, male or female. Love is a rare and precious thing. You cannot do it or take it, demand it or expect it. If it comes it hits you like a train. But fantasy can be a fine solace. Spitman
